Monument to the Saladero Worker

The Monument to the Saladero Worker honors the memory of the workers who labored in the salting plants (saladeros) that were the economic heart of Barra do Quaraí from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century.

Historical Context

The saladero industry processed cattle into dried salted meat (charque), which was exported to national and international markets through the Río de la Plata. At its peak, the plants slaughtered over 90,000 head of cattle per season and employed more than 250 workers from Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

The decline began in 1917 with the arrival of refrigeration technology, which made the traditional salting methods obsolete.
